yay this is like christmas!

okay: you have a slot for 2 single coils, but its a basic pickguard so routing new holes will be easy. Here are my suggestions:

heres a helpful chart
(ignore the model limitations)

okay: there are 3 types of coiled pickups: (classified by magnets)
Alnico 2 - the original and oldest type of pickup, warmest sound, less volume, and lasts a shorter time
Alnico 5 - Developed to be a longer lasting, more powerfull alnico 2, louder, longer lasting, not as warm.
Ceramic - Newest type of coil pickup, strongest magnetic pull, most volume, barely any warmth, used mostly in humbuckers.

Now, i would suggest an alnico 2 and the neck position. this would require no routing, and it would give oyu the warmest sound possible, very jazzy. Then i would get a ceramic bar or an angrier alnico 5 and the bridge for the bite. Then i would replace what i assume is your 3 way switch with a 5way so you can greater control the amount of bite. and i would definetly go Seymour Duncan. They are the figurehead company of pickups.

defintely go with two single coils and the chart should really help with your decision. if your dad is educated in electronics you can absolutely wire this. no problem

well the point of the charts is for you to choose.
i would put a donahue at the neck and... a little 59 at the bridge
and duncans work everywhere, and there is no middle....

well his best config is gonna involve a humbucker in the neck, so theyre gonna have to route anyway, so why not add a hole?

no no no... put the donahue at the neck, not a humbucker, humbuckers belong in the bridge position if anywhere, and for the jazz sound hes best off without em
