Theory Question

Unread post by Appfro » Fri Aug 01, 2003 3:10 am

Ok, this is for song writing. if like for example i wanted to play a song in the Key of C, i look and see that i can play Cmaj, Dmin, Emin, Fmaj, Gmaj, Amin yada yada yada. First of all, could i play any form of any of those chords, or are there certain limitations?

Like for example can i always play C, Cmaj7, Csus, Csus2,4, or any other form of Cmaj as long as its a form of Cmaj?

***Also, i looked around and couldn't find anything, does anyone know a website that lists LOTS of chords in any particular Key?

I HATE THEORY!!!!

that kinda works...but i need more than just chords that are C based or D based. i need "you can use these chords if you are playing in this key" i found something close, the link had all of the keys and each link said "more damn chords than you will ever need in this key" but either the site was down or it doesn't work anymore. im thinking the latter

I found that if your playing in a major key, if you play the major scale in chords it would be MmmMMmm (M=major, m=minor).

So if you're playing in the C major key, some chords that would be acceptable would be:
I. Cmaj
ii. Dmin
III. Emin
iv. Fmaj
V. Gmaj
vi. Amin
VII. Bmin

and i think you can just vary chords off of those, but im not quite sure cause i just figured that out and i havent had time to play/test it cause of my damn sprained thumb :(

I hope that helps, and if its crap, forget everything u just read :)

i would suggest using the min#5 for the last chord in the major scale... it sounds so much better than diminished...

as for your question appsoldier, you can use all those forms you just mentioned. but be careful with other chords... they will work as long as the notes in them stay in the scale...

for instance in the key of C, the third note, E, is minor... you can play stuff like Emin7 or Emin11... but you couldn't play something like Emin9 because one of the notes in that chord is not in the key of C

the truth is the above statement is being kinda of nitpicky, if you actually played an Emin9 in a song in C major wouldn't sound that bad... as long as you stay to the major/minor tonalities that you mentioned before, you should be alright
