stretching?

Unread post by tbillie41 » Thu Jul 31, 2003 8:39 am

I've been playing for about 3 months now, and one of my biggest problems is that my middle and ring fingers *refuse* to strech apart. (left hand of course). if my fingers are straight, they will stretch in the star trek vulcan fashion, but as soon as they are bent like i'm playing no such luck. Has anyone else had this problem? are there any exercises or anything i can do to help, or is it just a matter of time?

any help would be appreciated.

Most people have a really hard time stretching when they are beginning. Just Practice, practice, practice and it will come, Pretty soon your fingers will get stronger and more flexible. Just stay with it man

practice away from your guitar too, like when your watching tv or walking down the street try to do chords with your hands, also work on moving from chord to chord. When I am bored people will see me tapping my fingers and ask what I am doing...... I'm doing the fingerings for the chromatic scale on a trumpet..... I can even do it with both hands.

what your talking about isn't really that much of a problem... anatomically speaking, its pretty much impossible to stretch your middle and ring finger apart from each other when they are bent (aside from forcing them open with your other hand) if you notice most chords aren't shaped to require you to stretch those two apart... concentrate more on strectching your pinky finger out... it will be much more useful and you'll regret it down the line if you neglect your smallest digit...
