So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Unread post by GreyStreet41 » Tue Jul 29, 2003 4:04 pm

I have this little problem, I can learn bits and pieces of lots of songs, but never really the WHOLE song, so, I figure I should compile a list of songs you guys consider "Good beginner songs" to learn all the way thru. Let me know where this thread could possibly be, or give me a good list.

Thanks guys(and maybe gals)...

The stone is a good beginner one. Also tripping billies and what would you say.

If your feelin spunky pantala naga pampa can teach you a lot about rythm if your just starting
Laughter come on downtown window
And we see faces walking back
Tonight everybody gonna remember

Gladly.
big eyed fish and true reflections both similar songs and easy to play. they also help get your fingers used to sliding.
jimi thing-->WWBOM builds up the pinky, which is crucial. so do rapunzel and granny.
to get used to muting, warehouse is great, as are two step and seek up.
Some people find the stone naturally, some don't. I have reasonably sized hands and still that song took me ages to get right. I still would not recommend it to a beginner. To build up that king of finger accuracy, I'd recommend recently so much more. the stone will come.
Captain and crash are the best finger stretchers.

the stone is very good for the pinky, but a new person may not be comfortable with the strech. THe granny chords would also be very wierd feeling to a newer player. So i think two step would be a good one for sure, also helps practice strum patterns.

One thing I just tried today is to play it with a capo on a higher fret where the frets are smaller and a stretch is not needed as much. It may sound a little wierd but it will get you used to the main pattern before you play it without a capo.
As for strum patterns, I dont think two step is very good for strummin patterns per say, it is better for strumming accuracy so you don't strum the open e and B strings which sound terrible. For good dave-style rhythm strumming, Warehouse and Minarets are good.

its definitely a pattern many (imo) are not used to, and exposing yourself to things that are different is a great way to get better.

PFWYG is insanely easy.

Proudest Monkey, probably the easiest, but boring.

Gravedigger is easy if you know your chords. People love it, too, when you play it for 'em.

WWYS is good for slides, although the jam in the middle has a couple funky chords.

LIOG, not technically difficult, but will teach you mutes and timing. Also the LIOG jam is quite easy and sounds great.
Peace,

Stunt
