Wow, whoever bumped this up. i was a little surprised to hear the comments on boyd. I think his style contributes a lot to the band, and his energy. His solos create a lot of energy compare to the other instruments.

i agree on how the violin is really hard to play in tune. and this is true.

I like Boyd, he fucks up, but no one ever bitches about Leroi totally missing his WAYG solo, or being more outta tune then Boyd.

Point of my post, who cares if he messes up sometimes, he's still a great violinist.

Funny shit.. I'm watching my 04 DVD and my friend who dispises DMB was like, damn, the violinist is good. (solo from Jimi). Just thought I'd add that cuz I just posted like 2 seconds ago.

Well, as I said before, this thread is from several years ago, at one of Boyd's low points. If you were to hear any of the shows from this time period, you would completely understand and agree. He was out of tune, out of practice, and didn't care. I'm very glad that he's come back to his roots.

he was better in '04, but I'll never call him a great violinist even at his peak, I know way too many college violin majors who can play circles around him...even when he hits the notes, his tone is still terribly harsh...

What he really needs to do is get rid of his zeta electric violin. I miss that cool electric/acoustic he played back in the BTCS days, or better yet, the straight acoustic one he played for the crash tours.

He had some tuning problems back in 2003, but corrected them in 2004. I like how he is looking for ways to solo in new ways. New videos from the recent tours are a testament to this, he is finally expanding his horizons away from pentatonics.
