Playing by ear

Unread post by kevmccon » Mon Jul 28, 2003 4:49 pm

hey,
this is my first post, but ive been a dave matthews fan for a long time, I just finished up a Music camp, where i took courses in Delta Blues guitar, and Celtic music. All my teachers had learned the songs by ear, i asked them how, (these were not simple songs), and they said they just practiced for endless hours, and im not lazy, so ive started Listening to songs and figuring them out and i dont intend to give up, but i dont seem to be getting anywhere close to the actual fingerings, i can tune my guitar pretty well, so i know im not tone deaf, I was wondering if you guys had any techniques to help or if i just have to keep at it. I think its very anti-productive to use tablature, but so far if i wanna play a cover its my only option.

learn the song slow and they find the spot on the neck where it feels easiest for you to play and sound correctly, it is either the right position or better than the posiition the rock artist who doesn't know theory used. as long as it sounds right it's right in my opinion.
