Warehouse muting

Unread post by serialwired » Tue Feb 22, 2005 2:44 pm

I know there was a thread like this at some point, but I can't find it. And yes, I even searched for it. But what would you say is the best way to get the mute down in Warehouse? I try laying my fingers across the strings to mute, but they always come up off the board, enough to get a sound, not a mute. Thanks in advance for the help!

I hate to be redundant, it just takes practice. I use my index finger laid across the all the strings when you do the 7-9-11 then when coming back I just use the index to mute the strings below the 3rd string 7th fret, then mute that string and the ones below when I play the 4th string 9th fret then mute that string and below when I play the 5th string 10th fret.

It really does take practice. When i first started playing their was a lot of buzzing and hitting strings that didn't belong, once you get more accurate with your pick it sounds a lot better. Good luck!

yeah, practice is a given. i was just mostly wondering how other people did it. i do the same as you, though. index through 7-9-11, but it was more so the last 3 notes that muting the bottom strings and not hitting the ones above them then anything else. but thanks for the quick response!

That is the tough part. Really no secret besides getting more accurate with the strumming. I still work on it and I am by no means 100% when doing it. It's a tough song and it just takes time. Practice it everyday for 5-10 minutes and in a months time you will be good to go.

yeah man, that's what i am doing. i play it usually until i start getting sloppy. then i put the guitar down for a while and come back to it. i'm usually more ready to play it at that point, and have had time to rest. it's good. learned a lot like that.

it has taken me a few years of practice to really get this song down. I thought I had it a million times, and when I listen to old clips they arent even close to as good as I can play it now.

Yea, I posted a clip a while back and I'm sure I can play it much better now. But one day, it just came to me, and it just flows now.

i can play 75% of daves songs, but that damn warehouse intro in my opinion is the hardest of daves riffs. I have been trying to play that for quite awhile and still dont have it perfect. i guess you have to just practice like everyone said.. good luck

After the 7-9-11 part, I swing my thumb up above the top of the fretboard to mute those top strings while you hit the higher strings.

Fock that man....

I play my own intro with those chords. Don't try to be perfect & nail that one performance he did. Shit, IM sure he played it differently the next night.

Just saw Dave do that on a solo DVD. So you are correct.

Really? I don't play as much Dave as I used to, but that riff came to me in thirty seconds just listening to it. I checked the tabs to make sure I got it right, of course, but I'd have to say Tripping Billies gave me a little tougher time. Maybe it's how the muscles in your fingers after years of influence, I don't know.

Also depends on how long you have been playing. If you played for a year or two then try it is easier than a beginner trying to learn it.

Yea, mute E and A with your thumb, helps me, if D drones, it doesn't sound too bad.
