Professionally Set Up

Unread post by thedirte » Thu Feb 17, 2005 4:24 pm

What do luthiers all do to your guitar when they 'set it up'. I know they can lower the action, and I would like my lowered a bit. Who here has had this done, is it worth the money, and how much does it usually run?

id say do it urself too, but sometimes more advanced adjustments need to be meade, like the filing of the nut or bridge, which oyu most likely cannot do effectively

I had some work done on mine and I can tell you if you don't really know what your doing have a pro do it. It may be simple but they know better than most people and 99% of the time your going to get better results.

I would say an average set up would be between $75 and $100. Usually involves truss rod adjustment, string height adjustment if you want, new strings, slight fret dressing if needed.

I just had a Fishman Nat II installed in my guitar and had a setup and bone saddle and nut installed it came too $340 including the price of the pickup, nut, and saddle. It plays better than the day I bought it and only wish I would have had a pro look at it earlier.

Where did you get your bone saddle from? I've heard good things about this guy http://www.guitarsaddles.com/. I'm considerin' replacing the tusq saddle of my 414CE w/ES with a ivory saddle and having a set up done, also.

I had a local guy do it in Philly. He was a Martin Certified guitar tech. He also provided the saddle. I have talked to the guy you are referring to and have heard good things. The only reason I didn't have him make me one was because I was having all this other work done as well. If I was just doing the saddle I would have gone with the guy you mentioned.

You should get your guitar set up at least once a year. I got mine done at Guitar Center, and it was a pretty dumb choice. They didn't really do a good job. But, a set up consist of cleaning of the fret board, truss rod adjustment, and new strings. Plus some other stuff that I don't know about. haha.

I put a bone saddle on my guitar by myself. Bought a blank from a local shop and sanded it to match the radius of the original one. Sounds much better, and the intonation is still perfect. Lowered the action a little bit too.

it wasnt hard, it just took a really long time. I have done a lot of wood work and stuff that required sanding so maybe I am good at it or something? I dont know.

Setups are usually around $40 depending on who you goto and what needs to be done.

Usually truss rod adjustments, or filing of the nut, adjustments of the bridge are all things that can make your guitar "easier" to play. These are common procedures and it is defin. worth the $ to get it done right!
