Learning To Sing
Learning To Sing
I've read most of the threads about this and i've learned a lot about how to sing and stuff. But i still have questions. Can anyone learn to sing, like obviously your genetics will limit/unlimit you, but can you be unlucky and not be able to sing at all? Also, i have a terrible ear and really can't tell what's on key and what isn't, how can i correct this?

Im sure you've heard this many times but I'll say it again--practice. I know that I was just trying to play/sing a song not too long ago and for some reason I'd either play it too fast or my singing really sucked. I don't know if many people here would agree with me, but you know you have a song down pat when you don't have to think about what your playing or what your singing. Also to help with your timing get a metronome.

singing is just as much a genetic thing as playing guitar or playing basketball...you practice your ass off, and after a while you will get good maybe even great...3 years ago I sucked at guitar, like really bad, but I fuckin practiced every day, and now "some" people on these boards have considered me a pretty good guitar player. Anyway, dont get discouraged...it may be later than some people, but if it's your passion, it will happen.
BTW, I have heard people improve at both singing and playing guitar on these boards, right in front of my eyes, so thats proof it can happen!

thanks all, but singing only i need to focus on singing before playing guitar AND singing. Also, when i practice i just sound horrible and off key. Should i just keep doing that and singing along with dave so i get get better?

i haven't taken voice lessons, but trust me they are essential to becoming a better singer...Acousjim wrote:Has anyone here taken singing lessons? If you have, do you recommend them?
your voice is just like any instrument, you can practice all you want, but if you have no direction, you won't go anywhere... the only difference is that is you practice your vocals incorrectly, you can do some serious damage... so definitely look into lessons
I'm Josh: sometimes known as Steve
I'm taking voice lessons right now and they're really helping. I had a decent voice to start with but the lessons teach you how to breathe correctly and get the most sound out of your voice. They also give you a lot more confidence to get up in front of people. If you get the chance to take them, do it
Breathing correctly is definitely a huge key...sing from your stomach...you can learn to pitch the high notes later on down the line when you develop your voice...some may not be blessed with good voices, but like anything if you practice you'll get it down...i call people like that 'blue collar singers'...they have to work harder than a god-gifted singer...you may make a few people nautious down the line, but practice at the beginning to find where 'your pitch' is...what tone/level your comfortable singing at...and then work with that...key is, don't try to be like Dave, he's got a unique voice

singing
I'm just starting to sing and play at the same time. One thing I found that really helps is to play a song that you know really well on guitar and know the words to really well also. Something easier helps too. Play some folk music, that way the hand can go on auto pilot while the brain can focus on the voice. Practice is what it really comes down to.....

i take voice lessons.
when i was a kid i had a great voice.
then a little thing called puberty happened and i blowed.
the only job i have ever really wanted is to be a musician and vocalist to sing my own songs, so i looked into and started getting voice lessons.
now my friends say i have a good voice! so all in all they really help with singing and are definately reccomended. so go on. just make sure your teacher is good.
Also, learn to sing classical music first, that is your natural voice and it is better than you think it is! also, push with you dieaphrama-thingy.
it also helps
P.S sing how you yawn. with a big open throat

You mentioned you practice by singing along with Dave.....dont do that!
If you're not playing guitar imagine the music in your head and try sing in your OWN voice!
Singing in your own voice is the most important, if you try to sound like dave you are just going to sound horrible and may end up sounding like a girl and probably give yourself some bad habits which are hard to shake.
When you're listening to Dave pay attention to the spaces he uses to breathe, you need to make sure you have air in those lungs.
Breath control is the 2nd most important part of singing, get that down and your set. Make sure you're singing from your gut, not your throat.
Vocal chords are pretty fragile so careful not to screw em up man..good luck, keep practicing.
Maybe get one of those 'You CAN sing' books, theyre good to get started with.
