PhunkDAfied

Unread post by fatjack » Mon Feb 14, 2005 8:49 pm

Okay, so I came back one day to read some posts, and all I see are threads about praisedave learning phunkdafied. In EACH one, he blatantly disregards good advice given to him by musicians who know what they are talking about (MWR for instance).

I do this not to gloat or to make you feel bad praisedave; I do this as one guitarist trying to help another. This took me less than an hour and a half to learn, and only two takes to record (two because my phone rang during the first one). And the recording may not be perfect, but that's because I'm not trying to be. I purposely split the song into two different tempos to show you that the song is actually played slower on the album than on the Larivee video. For fucks sake man, get the damn record (and maybe you'll start spelling the title correctly :P ).

Now, I did this not because I have some strange obsession with "pop/slap" or finger tapping (but I do agree that this is quite a fun song to play). The point I'm trying to make is that I was able to learn the song a little than you easier because of my experience. I guarantee you wouldn't have had to climb such a large mountain if you took the time to learn some damn technique.

I also did this to prove another point. This song isn't some sacred promised holy grail of guitar playing. There are NUMEROUS pieces out there that far surpass this in terms of technique and composition (one of them being King's own Knock On Wood). So, lets not all just bend over for Mr. King; every guitarist has the capability to play like this.

I would have liked to have done a video, but I got tired of my friend being a Nazi with his camera.

Take my advice or not praise, either way keep at it, because I know you are going to regardless.

P.S. Sorry the volume level is so low, but I didn't feel like fiddling with it.

on first view, i'm not sure who you're yelling at here, but either way, good job on the recording :D

however, as a personal friend of praise's, he's learning at his own pace (and doing quite well for it), and should be given room to grow. on you're side, though, he should probably listen to advice from his seniors. so basically, what i'm saying, is that i'm john kerry.
he's doing well, but needs to get better...
he needs room, but has to listen to advice...
if that makes any sense...

very outstanding version of a very great song. I'm pretty proficient at tapping, and I'm building my own style based on Justin King's style. (While I agree that he's not a god, he's very good, and his style is just damn fun!)

I was almost disappointed when I realized that many of his songs were almost easy after some practice, because it was like some of the most insurmountable music out there was just revealed as, well, mountable, i guess.

Oh well, *gets off soapbox*, kudos to you, kudos to Justin King, and well, kudos to me, I guess, for my speech.

Badass Josh. Absolutely badass. How are your originals coming? Did you end up going to that one school?

ok... first of all its good to see you back man, seriously it is

now 2nd of all im sorry that i hd the name wrong, my bad. i wish i could get teh cd but im too young to have a credit card and my rents are online purchase phobic.

congratulations on learning the song so quickly. im very impressed. i dont see any reason for you to attack me personally though. i never did anything to you nor did i "blatantly disregards good advice given to him by musicians who know what they are talking about". i can only name one person that gave me advice other than "dont try and learn it, you're not good enough". read over the thread again. i just asked for help on learning slap/pop and tapping. ONE person gave me info that helped me. everybody else just told me to quit. so i taught my damn self. i taught myself the damn technique. nobody else would fuckin help. now im about a week or two away from bein able to play it fully, no thanks to anybody on this website. (except them thinking that i couldnt learn it fueled me!) nobody is bending over to mister king, i merely saw this as a cool guitar piece i thought would be fun to learn. plus its one of the only impressive instrumentals within my grasp. seeing as i cant sing, that was attractive to me. my hope os to move to more songs like this, like some stuff by andy mckee and then write my own stuff like this eventually.

thanks for postin the slower tempo to help me out, i like that tempo better actually.

edit: in all that i fergot to actually comment on your cover: well done. i feel like it gets sluggsh around the fast hammers in the slaps, but for the most part i was blown away. im gonna go work on speeding up my tapping section now :D

like i said, i wasn't trying to "attack" you, just help. i thought maybe hearing this from another person might help

and you DID disregard MWR's advice. he didn't simply say, "you suck, stop trying." he suggested that maybe you should wait and learn a lot more before you tackle something like this.

and its great that you are on your way to learning it fully, but it would still fail to impress me. i see this so much: a person with reasonable potential glazes over basic technique to try to learn some "impressive" song. so you might be able to play it? big deal. no professional musician would consider you as feasible jsut because you can play one "impressive" song. this is what i like to call "stairway to heaven syndrome." how many people do you know that get a guitar and the first thing they try to learn is stairway. they can struggle through it, and they may be able to impress their girlfriend or some boorish goob at a guitar store, but what else can they do? nothing.

a good guitarist is a well rounded one; one that is versatile and can adapt to any style. amongst musicians, that is more impressive than playing some something that is more of a "parlor trick" than actual skill.

no, i didn't have enough money, so i went to U of A. the music school is good, but as a guitarist i am forced to be in the toughest music program outside of graduate studies.

also it kind of sucks that the guitar professor recently became an associate dean, and has very little time to give me lessons, but i suppose its better than nothing

and my originals aren't really coming at all. i decided that i wasn't yet experienced enough to do so and realized how foolish i was to try to write my own material at this point. i still have so much more to learn and so much more experience to garner. and then there's the fact that i dont have the time to do so. jazz standards, classical repitiore and numerous scales occupy all of my practice time now.

Josh, really really badass. But I have to be the devil's advocate. The name of the song is Phunkdified. Not to be a bitch, that was really awesome. If you can offer up any suggestions on tapping and how you can get that percussive quality from the guitar, I'd like it. Again, not to be a bitch, that was really, really good.

ah, yes you are right about the title, but praise was wrong as well i think

i believe he was spelling it phunkified, without the "d"

excellent job on bringing down the hammer of fallacy, a kudos is due to you my friend

okay, now here's for some actual advice on tapping:

i find it much easier to get the notes to sound if you strike the note as far from the fret as possible and then sort of slide toward it.

also keep in mind that the real sound that is prominent in this particular tune is the pull off. treat the actual fretted note as a sort of passing tone and really try to bring out the pull off effect

You're right about Praise's misspelling, I kept myself from making his posts look worse before. Thank you for the assistance, but I really need like the most basic tapping advice. Is there any reference you know of I could check out?
