one sweet world intro picking pattern

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

one sweet world intro picking pattern

Unread post by max » Wed Feb 02, 2005 11:30 pm

I was wondering if someone could give me some help with picking the OSW intro. I learned it fingerpicking, but it's not loud enough, so I thought I'd try a pick, but I suck. I've never taken a guitar lesson and I don't know the right way to pick a riff like that. Should it be all down strokes or should I pick the high note of a chord with an up stroke? Or is it just whatever the hell I want?

yeah every now and again i throw in upstrokes to make things easier... just have to feel it out i guess.

After you get past the first finger "jump" in the begining the intro is pretty much cake. That first "jump" took me forever to get down

becuase the rhythm of all the notes is all the same, it is mostly downstrokes, but again do what is comfortable.

I know I have gotten alot better at picking from practicing scales going up and down the scales picking up and down without stopping, you might want to try that if you want to get better at picking.

i alternate pick the entire song.... i just played it a few times and I think i picked it differently every time. do whatever is comfortable, all downstrokes is gonna hurt you in the end though.

all-downstrokes has disadvantages. in the long run.. you will never get speed...

ya man, i can relate.

just do UP down up down.. up down, its easier on the muscles in your hand (and is why you can go faster) and it just makes more sense.

If you are working with any scales they are good practices for up down.

Now, songs like satelite are good for that too.. (althought throughout songs there are always times where you would have a down down and not just up down.. ) ya! work on it.
how long have you been playing?

Here is a regular speed one, I down pick when i play it, this will give you a sense of the rhythm and how to transition and do it again

http://www.soundclick.com/util/Streamm3 ... 70138&q=hi

this a slow one, it will give you a sense of what to do with each note (slides, hammerons and pull-offs)

http://www.soundclick.com/util/Streamm3 ... 70151&q=hi

click on music on the right in the yellow box, you will see OSW Intro (regular) and OSW intro (slow)

if you have any questions get me on AIM

You don't need to go UP AND DOWN religiously...you can rake across strings, etc. Just don't use one stroke for the whole thing, think economy of motion. If it takes less effort to hit the next note, then use that technique that takes the least effort.
