I've heard this term "DI" used to describe an accesory that dave uses to trim the strumming noise and feedback from his signal before it reaches the amp. Does anyone know what the technical term for that is and if so, what brand and model does dave use?

direct input... its used to balance the signal...
Guitar -> 1/4" cable -> DI Box -> XLR -> PA
it can also improve the sound depending on what you get... an Avalon U5 for example will improve it greatly.
