Singer's guitar found on eBay

Folk star Peter Yarrow's long-lost guitar was up for auction on eBay until alert fans notified authorities and it was recovered in Sunny Isles Beach.

Thanks to eBay and G-men, folk singer Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary fame has found his long-lost guitar -- in a Sunny Isles Beach condo.

''I'm a happy dragon,'' Yarrow, 66, said Tuesday, playing on the words of the renowned folk trio's 1960s hit, Puff (The Magic Dragon) .

Yarrow lost his beloved Larrivee guitar -- which he had used at every musical performance since it was built in 1973 -- following a Dec. 9, 2000, flight from Washington, D.C., to Fort Lauderdale at the end of the trio's 40th anniversary tour.

The Canadian-made guitar with a rainbow strap was packed in a black case with Yarrow's name on the outside.

Over the weekend, fans tipped off eBay that the missing six-string guitar was being auctioned on the website. The last bid was $2,600 -- before the online auction company yanked the sales item and notified the FBI in Miami.

Agents electronically traced the sale back to a Sunny Isles Beach address on Monday.

''It was yanked because fans knew it was stolen and told eBay,'' FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said, declining to identify the seller. ``We were able to track it down within one hour.

''He said he was selling it as a favor for a friend of a friend of a friend,'' she said. ``He said he didn't know it was stolen.''

Orihuela said the FBI had no plans to pursue a criminal investigation, partly because of Yarrow's wishes.

''I didn't want to press charges,'' Yarrow, of New York, said, adding that he was grateful to eBay and the FBI. ``I've been missing that guitar for four years. Musicians get very attached to their instruments.''

When he discovered his guitar didn't show up at the baggage carousel following his 2000 flight to Fort Lauderdale, Yarrow issued a press release that offered a $500 reward for its return.

''The guitar not only has an extraordinary sound but is also an irreplaceable part of the musical legacy of Peter, Paul & Mary since it has been used on every album release and in every concert of the trio's since its creation in 1973,'' according to Yarrow.

Yarrow first appeared with Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers as Peter, Paul & Mary at The Bitter End, a Greenwich Village coffeehouse, in 1961.

The trio turned into the most popular pre-Beatles singing group in the country with the folk hits If I Had a Hammer and Puff (The Magic Dragon).

I was actually kinda pissed when they took it from me. I can't believe they actually believed that I didn't know it was stolen.
