I'm not seeing how this adds up in terms or rhythm, unless you hit the open g at the same time as you make the slide.

Try it. I wish I had a way to record so you can see what im talking about, but if you listen to the L@LC version you can hear the open G very clear.....

i think dave just slides 5/7/5 really quick (from watching gorge dvd) so that would be the same as doing 5/7 on the d then open on the g. i do them both ways, depends on how lazy i am.

I think this is what Dave does too (and he doesn't do it all the time from what I can tell). Playing the open G doesn't seem to have the correct intonation to me, while sliding back down to 5 does.
