This thread is fascinating me. Are you all saying that you rarely use a pick when playing your acoustics? I play a lot of finger style stuff as well, but it seems that to 90% of playing Dave is getting the strumming down with a pick.
For example, how would you play Tripping Billies, Grey Street, Ants, LIOG, etc., etc. without strumming. Do you just strum with your index and thumb?
I think that some songs come together nice using fingerstyle: WAYG, Grace is Gone... I just started playing Crash without a pick... but others are all about strumming.
Can someone explain... I'm confused.

Ive never use a pick ,like fire said, unless neccessary, but with any thing there are advantages and disadvantges, but its like that with any particluar playing style. I just fell into this one.

I just diddled my way through the verse line of crash.. I pluck all the bass notes with my thumb.. and then all the accents aftert the bass notes are raking of the fingers (clapton style).. and then all the light strumming I do with my index and thumb.. hope that is explainative enough..
I just want to add myself to the body count of, I use my fingers more than a pick.. the only time I use a pick on an acoustic is when I need some hauling notes.. same goes when I play electric really

BE CAREFULL!!! I started playing w/o a pick to get good at finger picking and i did. but then i did an open mic night and used a pick, but since it had been so long since id used one i dropped the damn thing inside the guitar in the middle of a song...and that shit's embarrasing. so if you're thinking about going w/o a pick, make sure you practice w/ one too.

I pretty much always play with a pick in my hand. rarely do I just fingerpick when I'm really playing, I just tuck it so I can switch quickly if I want to.Appsoldier wrote:BE CAREFULL!!! That's something ive been trying to do, but i always fuck it up. i saw timmy doing it when i watched the Live in chicago video...but i suck at it, i always lose it or lose the beat or something. so im not about to try to do it public and make myself look like a total ass just yet. But i am working on it.gcom007 wrote:I pretty much always play with a pick in my hand. rarely do I just fingerpick when I'm really playing, I just tuck it so I can switch quickly if I want to.Appsoldier wrote:BE CAREFULL!!!
