So Much to Say Verse

Unread post by War Eagle » Sun Jul 13, 2003 4:02 pm

Hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone could give me a tip playing this part:

Verse
Dave plays this once then the intro twice as one rotation of verse
E:------5-------------------------------
B:------5-------------------------------
G:------5---4\6-------------10----------
D:---------------7------5---7--------7--
A:--------------------3-----x------5----
E:-3\5--------------1------/10---3------
(2) 4 (1) 2 1 2 4 (3) 1 2 4

Namely the part that goes 1-3-5 and so on. It just seems I am way too slow. I've been practicing and I know that is what I have to do to get it. But I was just hoping someone had a pointer or two! Thanks guys.

War Eagle,
Joshua

i know this looks hard, but its not really that tricky
all you hafta do is put your finger in the formation like you were gonna play a XXX531 chord and just sort of pick the notes
your index finger is on the 1st fret, your middle finger is on the 3rd and pinky is on the 5
then for the slide up to the 10.. its just kinda like the 2 step intro chord (i think) use your ring finger on the low e string, pinky on g, and index finger on the d
and the XXX753 chord is pretty much the same as the first one
(and if im wrong on any of this... somebody PLEASE correct me, this is how i play it and it works fine)
so its pretty much made up of standard "dave" chords that you just pick through
you just hafta really stretch out you r pinky on those 135 and 753 chords

and welcome to the boards!! :D

yeah, once you get those 135 chords, its easy breezy. just practice going from the first part into the 135 over and over until you get some muscle mem'ry goin. 135 135 135. itll come in no time. 8)

I cheat a bit and I kinda misread the tab but it still sounds right. I don't play the chord, i just slide down the 10 on the E string. If you slide up the 5 lightly (from the 1 3 5) you get the general slide noise and then you know what? It sounds like the studio versian (crash)!! It's possible i'm insane but who knows?

Hey guys,
Thanks for the input. I really do appreciate it.

However what you just said is my problem. I am just way to slow, but I will say I've gotten a little faster just by practicing it over and over. Anyways thanks again.

It has a very syncopated feel. Think of it like 4 movements/notes (3>5, 5/5/5, 4>6, 7) and then the 1, 3, 5, insted of the (3>5, 5/5/5, 4>6, 7, 8<). Just listen to the riff...9.11.92 really helped me get it.

in those two shots of 3 notes... (i mean the 1,3,5 and then the 3,5,7) try to focus on the 3rd note, and accentuate it as much as possible, then once you start getting it, the first two notes will be easier to hear.

Yeah this is what I started to do. I still can't get the 1 in the 1,3,5 most of the times, but I'm sure it will come. Thanks again guys, it really helped me out.

naturally i release it at about 4 or 5 because i slide down with my 3rd finger and the beginning 3/5 slide is with the 2nd finger so i just kinda switch..

I usually go to the 4 or 5 like the other people. IMO it doesn't sound right to go all the way to 3. It makes it sound too emphasized. Also, if anyone has heard this song live this year or sometime recently, dave does a whole bunch of crazy muting in the intro that make this fun song even more fun. Anyone follow me here???

Now that I think about it, I vary between the 3 and the 4...it just depends.
