You should always try to use distilled, as Coldchilling was saying, the deposits in tap water and even spring water will damage your humidifier.

distilled water is just pure H2O. Tap and spring waters contain other chemicals in the solutions.

distilled water doesn't boil, it just gets REALLY hot. and if you get it hot enough and then drop a piece of metal in it, it'll explode.

or so i've heard.

that's interesting... never heard that. i didn't think/know it was possible for something not to boil if you reach its boiling point.

and you use distilled water because the minerals and other impurities in regular tap or drinking water can actually harm your guitar and the humidifier

sure - although most people actually prefer non-distilled water, ebcause distilled water has absolutely NO taste - regular drinking water has minerals that gives it some taste that you don't really notice until it's gone

I had to get in on this as I am a chemistry grad student. Distilled water does boil and will not explode if metal is dropped in. Regular tap water contains mostly chlorine and traces of calcium, magnesium and flouride depending on where you live. As c_tietze said the other elements in tap water will not only damage your humidifier, but over time your guitar as well. Make it a point to only use distilled. You can drink it and in fact it is better for you.

How would it damage my guitar though? I still don't get it? Will chlorine eat away at the wood?
