Has Anyone ever done this?..

Unread post by Smaegol » Sat Nov 30, 2002 2:09 pm

Have any of you ever played #34 with a drummer and a good sax player? I was jamming with my brother and his drummer about a week ago and a good friend of my brothers is a great sax player, so for kicks we decided to try it and after about a half hour of getting our timing down we nailed it pretty good, and I gotta say, when its done right, that is maybe the most powerful song Ive ever played with a group.. especially that last jam part!! wow!!

Just wanted to share...

Peace,
Smaegol

P.S. when you guys/gals play #34/Satellite/Stone do you finger pick it or do you use a pick?? Ive always used my fingers and I want to know if its harder to keep the timing using a pick

i have never played with a saxaphone player but i have this girl friend that play's the violin and let me tell you, we play some of the pimpest shit together. it makes everything sound soo different when someone is playing the guitar and someone is playing a totally different instrument like the sax or violin, or even the drums. my favorite song to play with her is trippin' billies. has anyone ever heard that version on that demos cd bootleg where boyd does the lead instead of leroi?

P.S. i always use a pick.

i know one sax player who ive been meaning to jam with...ill keep that in mind. as for the pick/finger thing, ive always played with my fingers. it started because i dropped picks all the time when i started playing, then learned Mark Knopfler stuff, and realized when i tried to play with a pick i couldnt do it at all

ALWAYS play with a pick. I like the sound so much more than finger picking. I finger pick certain songs. Like a version of Canon in D that I'm working on. Not possible with a pick, actually.

But yes, satellite and stone both are done with a pick.

I use a pick for those. I find it easier to keep the timing with a pick. The movement of the pick matches the timing of the song closer than the movement of picking fingers which tends to have a more "asynchronous" movement about it.

I think he was just referring to the fact that you can't play his canon in d with a pick, but to relate it to dave, canon in d is basically the lie in our graves jam minus the f#
