reality

Unread post by katie » Mon Jan 10, 2005 9:25 pm

I found this quote, you guys think we have a good sense of reality here?

Dave Matthews, Dave Matthews Band, Time Magazine

“I go back to South Africa at least once a year, sometimes twice, and usually for a month. And probably, I'm guessing, I'll spend more time back there as I get older…South Africa gives me a perspective of what's real and what's not real…So I go back to South Africa to both lose myself and gain awareness of myself. Every time I go back, it doesn't take long for me to get caught into a very different thing. A very different sense of myself. It's a melting pot, southern Africa. You find these cultural collisions that result in art and music, and it's pretty amazing.”

that's why I goto the mountains and into nature, what do you guys do to gain perspective - a sense of reality?

shrooms, o wait to gain a sense of reality, usually me and my friends will head down to a gorge about an hour and a half away, bring a couple guitars and other "stuff" and camp for 2 or 3 days

the gorge in seattle or another local gorge - close to you.

don't you think the news is tainted? I kind of always got that impression. I want to get the news from all different countries and see what is going on from their perspective. I'm sure it would be quite different then what I'm lead to believe.

sometimes I feel you just never know who to believe anymore.

sam - ever heard of samael?

I love that name sam, it's neato -

again thanks for the company on this lonely evening.

yeah well, i was a little joking about the news thing, but not too much: whenever i think my life sucks i just turn on the news for 10 minutes, see how terrible it could really be(suicide bombings, murders, rape, tsunami, tornado, famine, car accidents....list goes on forever) it really puts things in perspective like "ok dude it doesnt matter that this girl wont go out with you" etc. and sam is a cool name, thank you.

check out the bbc and npr, i know its sound nerdy but it seems like they put a fairer spin on things, i think a majority of american media is tainted, they try to scare you into watching, i havent watched the news in a long, long time, id rather listen to it on the radio or check out the bbc's website

I think it's a lot easier to make intelligent comments about reality when you play music for a living and don't have to worry about paying your rent.

The biggest cog that keeps my creative wheels from turning is having to work a real job and pay my bills. What time is left over is left to performing, creating, etc.

yea, when you get paid to play music, you have a lot more time to be creative, because its your only job, when you have to occupy 40-50 hours of your week with work and about 40-50 with sleep, than 10-15 hours doing other stuff, you really dont have much time left for reality and being creative

well, i live in vermont for 9 months out of the year..the green mountains are only a ten minute drive outside of burlington. i also go to this place called "indian brook"..it's gorgeous in the fall, there are trails surrounding the lake and it's just very quiet. there's one spot there that i like to go to and relax..the rocks extend out into the lake and they're very flat so it's perfect to just lay there and read or listen to music. or just listen to everything around you. great thread katie

My friends family owns a cabim in Montana (30 min from the Canadian border). Its in the middle of a lake and has no electricity. Me and him drive up there every summer and spend a few weeks at a time. Its a nice break. No city for miles so at night you can see the starts perfectly, as well as a few satallites. Plus its nice to get away from everybody since we only take one or two other people with us.
