specific playing style question
specific playing style question
I just have a question about the way Dave plays some of his songs. On songs like Tripping Billies and Grey Street during the main sections of the songs there are only two notes being freted. When I look at the tabs for these songs, they seem so simple and I can easily play them with just
my first two fingers by sliding up and down the frests and they sound correct. Yet, on the videos and when Dave plays them, he uses all four fingers, spread throughout the frets in really weird and difficult positions to get the same notes. Is there some advantage to playing these songs like this or is it just the way he learned to play and is comfortable doing
so? Thanks for any feedback.

Re: specific playing style question
I definitely think there is an advantage in playing them the way on this site. Especially Grey Street, he hits those chords pretty quickly and if you have to slide up with two fingers it doesn't sound as good IMO.dillopod wrote:I just have a question about the way Dave plays some of his songs. I think that part of my problem with these is that the tabs do not really show which fingers go where, just the notes that should be fretted. I guess I answer my own question with saying that I could watch the video but they are played so fast it's hard to pick out what's going on. I would love to see a tab of grey street or tripping billies with the finger numbers at the bottom of the tabs like some of the songs have.

Of course, if you are playing with two guitars, one sliding and the other fretting sounds cool. Dave and Tim do that for the first few bars or satellite.

I'm all about what is comfortable and sounds good to me. I like playing gray street with the 2 finger option cause I think the slide gives it a bit more flavor when playing alone. The 4 finger option does have a cleaner sound to it though...which gets back to the preferance issue

I disagree. Usually the things he does that people consider harder is just because that seems like how he's used to playing guitar. Anything that there is an easier way, he probably just felt more comfortable playing it the way he didMWR wrote:For the most part that's true but there are times when he makes things harder for no apparent reason.BigSpeen3436 wrote:Dave doesn't seem like the showy guitarist when he plays, so if he plays it a certain way there must be a reason for it, just my 2 cents.

I knew I should have clarified more because someone would contradict me. Yes he's playing the way HE feels comfortable but logistically it's not the best way to do it.DMBFan63 wrote:I disagree. I understand that bro. I'm saying that to him, and likely to others, his way of playing things are the easier wayMWR wrote:I knew I should have clarified more because someone would contradict me.
