The teacher is definitely not wrong. That is the correct way to hold/play guitar. It's not just for fingerpicking, its for everything. Most people don't play that way though. If you play any complicated classical or jazz guitar, it makes it 100x easier. That doesn't mean if you play easy stuff it doesn't help, it still does.
