Nutshell - Alice in Chains cover

Unread post by Speenis » Wed Jan 05, 2005 2:44 am

Here is a recording a few friends and I whipped up tonight while drinking some beers and smokin a lil bit. I am on the rhythm guitar and the lead fills. My friend Paul is playing a solo on guitar and sings background vocals. My cousin Brad is on lead and backup vocals. Let me know what yall think.

EDIT: Updated version.... I re-recorded the lead fills and messed with a few things.

I haven't listened to it yet, but I definietly will. Finally a song that doesn't have to do with love and all that sappy bullshit. 'Jar of Flies' is probably the most depressing album I've ever listened to. I think my favourite Alice in Chains song is 'I Stay Away', because Layne just blows you away with his vocals.

I know what you mean. Layne has one of the best voices in all of rock history. I think you'll like my cousins vocals on this song.

Vocals were on point. Very good.

Some constructive criticism:

The timing seemed a little off in the guitar work though... I guess what I mean is the notes were correct, but the bends and timing were not quite what Jerry plays. Also, although not really relevent, the 'style' in the solo didnt seem to fit. Too fast and not enough bluesy bends (if that makes sense).

Also, to avoid the clipping and stuff, you should record at a lower volume, or use compression.

Yeah I know what you mean about the lead, one part I never come in at the right time (the second riff). The solo was just something my friend came up with in his second take. He wasn't thrilled about it but I liked it so I kept it. Thank you for the criticism. We ended up redoing the vocals because some of it got distorted (shitty $10 computer mic) and it came out A LOT better.

Vocal is really good. It sounded like the guitar is recorded plugged straight in because the sound quality was really different. I guess it didnt blend well. Overall, this is a good recording. THe second half of the solo at the end is pretty nice, he must have improvised right?

Yeah, he did it all on the spot. I think he came in perfectly because you can't even tell I did the second lead fills in a separate track than the solo.

this is pretty good. u need to turn down u guitar and turn up the cpu recording volume to get rid of that drive when you strum hard. the guitar is only average, there were lots of ways you could have spiced up the riff. vocals were real good and the lead was pretty good too.

Yeah we really didn't spend a lot of time recording it, it was just something we have wanted to record for awhile so we just plugged right into my friends soundcard and recorded from there. Nothing fancy, just something we thought we could do while being quite stoned and drunk. :D

I really don't see it being a lazy recording. We just didn't see the need to re-record anything else, it wouldn't have made that much of a difference with our setup anyway.

I'd also like to note that we basically combined both the studio version of the song and the unplugged version for this cover. Vocals sound more like the album where the guitar is more like the unplugged version.

ive not heard the unplugged version, so i cant comment on that.

when i said lazy i just meant that there were a few little things u could fix that would make it great and you just seem content with a decent recording. with just a little tweaking on the rythm and fixing that volume drive it could be fantastic.

This is great. Your cousin has a really awesome voice. It definietly lends itself to this kind of music, no doubt. Guitar and everything was awesome. :D
