Unread post by CPTino3001 » Wed Jul 09, 2003 10:54 pm

I'm trying to get into playing my Les Paul more frequently, but after only playing acoustic I can't seem to approach it the same way, and I'm having some problems...

I'de appriciate any insight anyone has...

just platy around with some tabs...there is a seperate approach to both...the same way you got familiar with the acoustic, you have to with an electric...their both guitars, but are very unlike each other...pick up some tabs and feel it out...I find it funny that I can't improv hardly at all on my LP...you just have to get the feel of it...

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

try putting heavy gauge strings. it will raise the tension and make it fell more like an acoustic.

its not that it feels different. its just that you have to use different methods to get it to sound good. you cant play distortion as if your playing an acoustic... itll sound bad..

well you see my acoustic feels like a fork in my hand...the electric feels comfortable...just pending on the effect, I have to manipulate the fretboard in ways I never had to use before on my acoustics...it has it's own field...

distortion can be a beautiful thing, but it has to be used just right.... i have a friend who plays his PRS Custom 22 through a peavy (and i hate peavys) and he plays it at max distortion on slow songs.. it sounds horrible... there are people that can use it right... look at five iron frenzy... theres about 8 members of the band and its perfect from the amount of distortion used to the harmony between brass and vocals... its crazy :)

i have no problem with distortion on a very very very small scale. but so many people use it for the wrong reasons. i hate seeing guitar players who can't play solos without distortion. makes me sad :(

in MOST cases, distortion is a tool to hide behind...Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam knows his effects...he is a perfect example of what I concider a HARD rocker but has talent and doesn't hide it...

yeah.... its a sick world out there.... the only metal i like is metallica, and i can only listen to them so much before i get irritated... the cool thing about them though is that they used to play "one" acoustic at the end of their shows, which shows they can do more than just stuff with distortion... they have some incredibly beautiful clean riffs in songs such as master of puppets (and one obviously..) ... then theres some bands who arent talented at all and if they tried to play anything clean that they would suck and get booed off the stage and get things thrown at them..

metallica is good example. i've never really liked much of their stuff, but they don't have to hide behind distortion. they actually have good musicianship.

Coldplay
Pearl Jam
Stone Temple Pilots

are among my favorites, because they have an edge at times, but they are wonderful musicians...the Deleo bros. from STP...amazing musicians...

oh and of course joe satriani (one of the best EVER) can do amazing things with distortion... because he has like 70000 effects lol... but he is one of the best guitarists ever..
