recording studio

Unread post by Appfro » Sat Dec 25, 2004 9:50 am

when i get back home, i'm looking into getting a nice little beginners recording setup going. i need at least 8 tracks, i want digital, and i'd like to have it set up to my computer. i know what you're thinking, i just described about 95% of all digital recorders out there. but what i'm wondering is what's the best that you guys have seen out there for a decent price?

i was looking at the digitech GNX4 workstation but i think that might be too much for what i'm trying to do. anyone got something that they think is freaking awesome and want to recommend for me?

because it only holds 60 minutes of recordings, so if you have a bunch of takes, or a longer song, itll be hard to get it in, when doing mixing, and recording work, you need breathing room. that thing holds only 128 megs... not too amazing to me.

id recomend this
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=r ... id/241106/

or possibly this for effects
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=r ... id/241107/

both are the same just the second has a few effects, they have 40 gig harddrives build in, thats plenty to polish off some good tracks with no worries of runnning out of space. and its $5 more than the one that holds only 128 megs.

ok, but i have a question. i've never used one of these before. where do you do the mixing? on the computer? and if so, can you like save tracks and mix them there so ultimately you could do more than 8 tracks. don't get me wrong, 8 should be plenty, but what happens one day if you need more ya know?

i'm a little confused as well...what is the virtue of one of these gadgets, now that programs like cool edit are out there? i understand if you don't have access to a PC all the time, but if you're talking a home studio mixer that you're gonna use in conjunction with a PC, why not just go with software?

can these mixer/recorders do things that software and a kickazz sound card can't? i would rather have the layout of cool edit in front of me (with all the track wavs in real time) than just a little LCD screen that shows a few things like time and levels.

i'm a newb at this stuff

thanks
