Recording Input Source

Unread post by unifaller » Fri Dec 17, 2004 8:07 pm

If you use a 1/4 to a 1/8 adapter (with a stage mic) for plugin to a PC sound card, how well will it sound compared to like a mixer or a MBox. If possible could anyone post some sample files with the differance?

well, im not sure... but stage mics are low impedence, so you need somthing to boost the signal => a mic preamp. mixers have mic pres on the mic inputs, or you can buy a separate one, and im not sure what the mbox is like

but it wont sound very good if you just plug a good mic right into the computer

Actually while I'm at it, whats the cheapest way of getting a pretty clear recording? Right now I have a PC mic that I got for free about 5 years ago and cool edit pro. I have an acoustic electric guitar.

ok, so if you do instrumental, just plug your guitar directly into your microphone input, then make sure you turn off your mic boost under your input setting. but if you want to record with multiple inputs at once, you need additional equipments.

Just instrumental. Will the sound card be able to pick up the acoustical tones and stuff that acoustic guitar amps pick up compared to like other amps.

Guess I'm gonna need to pick up a 1/4 to 1/8 anyways :)

and thanks alot btw, I really appreciate the insight.

When you use recording processors like a computer...then you are using a digital connection. Your mic is analog (1/4 and1/8 plugs are analog)...inside your computer is an AD-IO converter... you are looking at the sample rate. The sample rate for your computer is prob. 16bit...44K. The mbox is porb. 24bit and 48k. Higher sample rate...better sound quality. People have the missconception that digital is better than analog signal wise.... that is a BIG fat lie... a digital interface runner at 24or32bit at 96K...is great but not analaog. Digital signal are just pictures of the incomming audio...analog is old fassion copper-wire...no pictures...full signal. If you asked an engineer if they would rather record a song to a computer running at 24bit...96K or use a Studer Reel-to-Reel...they will take the Studer. Always go for the highest sample rate possible!!

that would work fine, but i recommend this, just 50 more dollars and you get a lot more features
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=r ... id/701368/

i got this baby and i am loving it, but buy an Mbox if you can. if not, get this, this gives you more inputs.
