It's supposed to deaden the strings when you're tapping. If you drag the yarn/hair tie down to like the 4th or 5th fret before you start a tapping riff/solo, you don't get the open string tones when you let off the notes.

as far as acoustic basses go... it sucks ass. but in a pinch when you wanna randomly go to the beach and play guitar with your buddies around a bonfire, its fine, or somewhere where you can't plug in. otherwise, i don't play it.
