1.my idea, 2.how to pay for it

Unread post by filmdude100cms » Mon Dec 20, 2004 10:57 am

1. so as im sure all of you know i plan on building a guitar this summer. im leanin towards getting a kit from stew-mac, since im buying finishing, and tuners from them. Itll be a dreadnaught bodystyle. I want mahogony back and sides, cause thats all i can afford. From there, i want either a spruce or cedar top. The coice is easy, go with cedar, but the kit comes with spruce, and some have said i should be able to pick another top wood for it, so if i can ill get cedar, if not, spruce. Its gonna be a dovetail neck, at the 14th fret. ebony fretboard, and 22-24 frets. gold grover tuners, and in gold pearl, an om symbol on the headstock, because it represents inner peace and tranquility.

all of this will total around $450-460

2. how the fuck am i gonna pay for this, now within the next week i should have enough money for all of this, with it being christmas and my birthday next weekend, but what if i mess up the kit. i need a good backup guitar, so im spending xmas and bday money on that... now if i got $300 by may, my mom might spring the the other $50 to get the kit, and i could save and buy the tuners and finishing supplies later. how can i get that money in 5 months, without the phrase "love you long time"? dont just say get a job, its hard to just get a job, when your workin with school an all. need suggestions

fuck making a guitar...just buy one, you don't run the risk of botching it, or have a luthier do it.

I agree as well, If you are making a guitar just to save money it probably won't work out. Don't forget you have to buy tools and stuff.

But if you do plan on making one, I know stew mac kits are high quality. But you can't switch the top wood to cedar, which is probably a good thing since Cedar is harder to work with.

I've documented the making of mine, I'm almost done check it out-

Best of luck with that. It would be sweet to own a guitar you made yourself. I don't think I would have confidence in myself not to screw it up the first try but all the power to you if you can do it.

good luck with that custom inlay... other than that you just need to take it slow and have confidence in yourself. i like spruce personally, but if you need the cedar get it from lmii. ( http://www.lmii.com ) im buildin mine from scratch... and it was gonna be quilted maple, but with the larry i just played im leaning towards mahoghany now. good luck man

Seriously, you're not looking hard enough if you can't find a job that won't fit into your schedule. There are plenty of places that will hire you for one or two shifts per week. You just have to be willing to work anywhere, and do just about anything. (Almost guaranteed to be shitty work, but come on...it won't take that long at all to save up a measly 450 if you don't pay bills.)

to make a guitar with great tone needs precise carpentry. Good luck making it. or just save up and buy one man. work a month and you have enough. i have confidence in wood working, but making a guitar is a whole new world than cabinets and chairs. you're build for sound and one single sound lead ruins everything.

if you're willing to put in the hard work and truly devote yourself to it tho, you will have something better than you could ever buy, regardless of how it sounds. if he has his heart set on building it then encourage him, dont try to change his mind.
