learn the nots scale (say one octave of a piano) and it will be pretty easy to know which are where in relation to another
Hah, today there was some type of word problem on the board in school that went "A B C D E F G H" and I was like "Shouldn't that H be an A?" and felt like a jackass cause it was in math class

if the lowered note is closer to the original note, tune down, if not tune up.

well, you are never gonna tune an octave upso I dont think you will break a string unless you go a full octave.

Basic, but cool.
I always play in dropped B when I play timmy's part in warehouse, because although the verse is the only part of the song where I have no clue what he plays, It is still fun to throw in lots of fills, especially with lots of dissonant open strings. Timmy in actuality tunes his guitar to drop b and has a pedal that can tune the bass string up and down one octive so he can get that reaaly cool growling bass sound to augment his fills.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
