Does anyone know of any singing instructional vidoes, like promised succes in 6 weeks type of thing. Because there seem to be no teacher in the area I live, any suggesstions would be appriciated.

The Rock-N-Roll Singer's Survival Manual by Mike Baxter is good I hear, but then you've heard that too. :D

Get yourself a girlfriend with a shitty voice who likes the same music you do. Play and sing along with her for a while. Sing as loud and as clear as you can to try and drown her out. Once you get sick of the girl and decide to dump her, you'll immediately notice the difference when you try to sing alone. Robert Plant is a great way to guage your singing range.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
