so i am one of those guys who just play dave tunes...the problem being i want to write my own songs...however i find that i am too nervous to branch off from just dave...i play at least 3 hours a day and i am afraid that if i don't play dave for 3 hours a day i will be come rusty with the songs i know and then i will feel i know nothing while i am writing my stuff...anyone ever felt this?

you wont get rusty, because you can work his style into yours. And its not like you just gonna write music 3 hrs a day without going off to relax. Go for it, you wont get rusty, you can always go back and play dave, but just as not frequently.

I disagree..I stopped playing for about 3 weeks to concentrate on other things and just started playing thursday night(last week) and I've forgotten a couple of songs that I used to play all the time

well yeah, 3 weeks.. i am just saying like, you can give 2hrs 45 mins to other stuff, and then 15 mins to Dave's. That wouldnt be too rusty on your dave style

I think as soon as you spend some time doing your own thing you'll realize how much more rewarding it is and you won't care if you forget a couple Dave songs.

I personally could care less. :D

I understand where you're coming from though. The thing is, you think you're brain has limited space when in fact it doesn't. If you play Dave 3 hours a day and step away from it for a month you could probably go back and relearn the song in all of five minutes. Muscle memory takes care of the guitar, it's the vocals that are hard to remember.

lol, unless you write stuff like mike, then everyone would be serenaded.

Haha, HaikuWarrior has got a point though. If I played my stuff for a group of 15 year old girls they would probably be like "what the fuck is this shit, play Hey Ya!*^*&^*&"

crash, ants, where are you going, one sweet world, and #41. relatively easy of a list. but its not about showing off, its about developing yourself as a guitarist
