Unread post by Tranman66 » Thu Dec 16, 2004 4:51 pm

Hey, heres one for you all to critique. 2 layers

L1: guitar 1: the one that strums
L2: guitar 2: improvisided lead

my improvised lead is not great. I guess this is kinda like a jam, however you think. Post your comment! thanks!

Alright, here's my crit's.

-Try to make the strings buzz less.

-Sounds like you're using a lot of down strikes when soloing. Practice alternate picking(down, up, down, up) to make it sound less flat.

-Bend the strings more when you're soloing for more emotion. It says on your site that you use heavy strings. I would strongly urge against heavy strings and opt for medium or light strings if you want to solo. I personally use light elixirs which are about the thickness of a standard medium bronze string. They're perfect and allow you to efficiently bend. Heavy strings may marginally improve your tone while drastically effecting your capabilities. Not worth it, in my opinion.

-Play at various speeds to have more of an effect when you solo. You're playing at almost the same tempo throughout the song. Change it up to keep it interesting.

-This is personal preferance, but it seems like your reverb is way too high. It makes it sound like some notes are buzzing when they really aren't. It's kind of a harsh sound.

-Listen for your timing over the rhythm when you play your solo. Leave more empty space. You're filling every second with notes and it's distracting. It bores the listener after a bit. You have to let the rhythm shine through a bit more and focus more on what you're saying rather than how much you say with your solo.

Many great guitarists go by the moto that it's the space between the notes, not the notes themselves that make a solo.

Anyway, just my honest thoughts. Hope you get something from this.

this is cool, but i cant really get into it, its like really chopped up and fragmented. it gets alot better as it goes but it still seems like its just random. try to use some more different notes too. just jump down to low e form high every once and a while and it will make your stuff alot more interesting.

Ah, thanks so much. i do use exilirs light string... i'll recheck my site. Thanks for the comment. yeah i'll have to rewrite the lead. it was fun improvising, but i gotta take it more serious and make an official recording. I dont know how i am gonna write out 4 mins worth of soloing, but i guess i gotta practice more leading, since i havent done much. Thanks.

Edit: i need to write the lead. Cant rewrite cuz i havent written it lol.
Add: I know what you mean, this one needs to be reorganized.

another thing I noticed, is that there is nothing really noticable about it. It's just random chord changes (not random, but nothing that stands out and is unique). There needs to be something to catch the listeners attention and they are able to remember about your song. I've been reading this board a long time and you have alot of heart for music. Just give it time and practice and you'll be just fine. Just try and come up with something unique that the listener can take away from your song.

THank you very much. We actually have a full band now, so we are a five piece of 2 guitars, sax, bass, and drums. We do have some recordings of one of our live shows coming soon and I was gonna post them here, but 2stepleadguitarist stole my thunder (he plays in a bad ass band too). But like I said before, you are always posting here trying to find ways to better yourself, and I think it's awesome that you take critisism so well. Just keep that attitude and you'll go far.
