Timmy on Two Step

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Timmy on Two Step

Unread post by Appfro » Wed Jul 02, 2003 2:48 pm

At the end of TS in the 3/29/03 concert, as well as in Tripping Billies on Storytellers where he plays the hell out of the High E and B strings. He keeps a finger on the B string and moves around on the E. When i try this it sounds like I'm strumming it and I don't get the two really fast notes sond that he gets...what am i doing wrong and how come i cant get that sound?

ps, anyone have any good intermediate to advanced soloing finger excersises, i could use all i can get

sure, sorry...tim does this thing where he's basically speed picking two strings. he keeps his, usually middle finger, on the B string and moves around on the E string. but when he does it, it sounds like two different strings being played...not a two string chord. mine sound like a two string chord. if you need an example, the only two i can think of off the top of my head are the very end of two step on the 3/29/03 concert and during the middle of TB on VH1 storytellers. plus im trying to learn to speed up my solos anyway, so im looking for advice there too.

well without listeneing, and being a big Tim freak, I think you are talking about when he just, like you said, speed picks the note...as opposed to strum...it is probably something he does alot...

list to this and tell me if you hear what you are talking about anywhere, and I will see if I can help, but I am still a tad sketchy on what exactly you are talking about...

Are we sure it wasn't some kind of effect he was using?

Yea im positive. on storytellers i saw watched him do it. i do it like he does, but i get a different sound, mine sounds like a two string chord, his sound like insane speed.

and yes, fire appears to be the man on the guitar :D

Code: Select all

E-3h5-5-5--3h5-5-5---8h10-10-10--8h10-10-10--
B-3h5-5-5--3h5-5-5---8h10-10-10--8h10-10-10--
G--------------------------------------------
D--------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------

E-7h8-8-8-8--7h8-8-8--5h7-7-7--5h7-7-7-------
B-7h8-8-8-8--7h8-8-8--5h7-7-7--5h7-7-7-------
G--------------------------------------------
D--------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------

I think I know what he's talking about. it's during the 3rd solo of Tripping Billies on Storytellers. Tim tremelo picks the B and e string. Keeping the 10th fret of the B string down, he dances around the high e at the 9th, 10th, and 12th frets.

But, in the 3/29/03 version of him doing the same thing, he moves around a little more on the B string. but when i try to do it, it just sounds like im stumming it, i can't get the cool sound, what am i doing wrong? or do i have to sell my soul to be able to play like that?

don't strum, TREMELO PICK!!! quick rapid strokes with the pick, its tough at first because the pick often gets caught inbetweeen strings, but keep at it.
