the making of a solo act...
I have no clue where I am going here besides some loose ideas...
I just wanted to throw some of my thoughts together and see what you guys think...
Since I bought L@LC when I was 12, I have always wanted to find MY Tim...trying to finding one when you are 16 is pretty hard...so, as I learned more and more and started to record, that opened up the door to lace some seperate guitar lines down...as I started to do so, I thought to myself...well I oughta' try some Tim...after a good while of "trying" to do Tim-like stuff...well...I got lazy and wanted to just improv...after a long while of that, I wanted to start incorperating that into my own style...with my own writing...then I started listening to people like Phil Keaggy and Keller Williams and even solo Tim stuff...it has inspired me to the point I am now...
so basically, I went from a Dave wanting a Tim, to a mix of both...like Keller...with the DD-6 and DL-4, I can put on some stuff for a small crowd...so I am now leaning toward a Keller Williams/Phil Keaggy style of solo experimentation...
I love the fact that most any song can be arranged for a solo acoustic guitarist on stage...that is where I am...I want to write my own music that can be played in a band (i.e. For Her), but also that I can put on as a solo guy on a stool with his guitar...
I think one of the vital points to arranging a song for acoustic soloists is being able (like Tim, Keller, or Phil) to cover both ends of the Dave/Tim persona...keeping things interesting for the crowd...keeping rythmn is imperative when you are playing solo...
many people want to be in bands...I guess that is not in the cards for me right now, but where are you guys with playing as a soloist...what do you see youself doing with this style...the likes of Dave/Tim/Keller/Phil...

You sound kinda like me.. years ago when I first got the light bulb to learn to play guitar, I latched onto the Dave+Tim idea.. A friend of mine starting playing guitar about the same time I did, and I realized how much "the Dave route" was easier than "the Tim route" and took it on myself to try and be the Tim to a someone else's Dave.. Leaving me somewhere in the middle now, as well.
Where am I going now? .. well, I don't much like vocals.. not so much because I am bad at, but because they are too up-front about what is being said.. instruments can convey an emotion without deluding it in ideas. I don't want people to wonder what the writer was thinking about. So, with that in mind.. I am drifting even more into the older Tim acoustical style.
Maybe years from now I'll find someone with something to say and I can back them up as well..

heh. the hardest part is finding people you can mesh well enough with and not having it turn into another Destiny's Child DMB-style.
i think, in the end, both paths (solo or duo/band) offer their own positive creativity....with going solo you have control of what's going on and making things your own vision, but with a band/someone else you have another offered perspective which can definitely shape how a song's going to sound.
personally, i'm going the solo route. i'm a bit of a control freak, and if i don't have things done in the way i have it mapped out in my head, it's gonna go down the crapper. *chuckles* i'm still a long ways off from being where i want to be with songwriting and song-playing skills, but i think it'll be a lifelong learning process, which might go faster without the burden of hauling someone else along the ride. listening to the songs i wrote a year ago compared to the songs now, there's been a drastic improvement, and i'm not sure if i'd personally be able to make that much growth on my own.
albeit, there are things to learn with working with other people.
i'm sure dave's learned at least a few things from the band and timmy.
