keep in mind that the DM3MD was inspired by the 1995 D-35 commemorative guitar above and beyond the HD-28V or HD-35...

you could certainly order one through the Martin Custom Shop, but its going to cost just as much as a new DM3MD, even without Dave's name on it (remember, its a Custom Shop Order)...

I suggest purchasing the HD-35, that is the guitar that is tonally similar to my DM3MD

So would you recommend the HD-35 over an HD-28V?

Yes, and for a few reasons....

The first is that dang saddle on an HD-28V...if it comes with a thru-saddle, its near impossible to have a Fishman UST installed, unless you want to modify the bridge. You could go with a bridge plate pickup, but they aren't meant for rock bands, IMO.

Second is the neck, the HD-25 is way more comfortable to play, and for some of the stretches that Dave makes, your arthritis will be acting up in no time...

Last is the overall sound...while the HD-28V is a great guitar, I think the HD-35 is more balanced and louder. And for those trying to copy a DM3MD, I suppose the guitar could be ordered with a 3 piece headstock...

believe me dude, the ES system is garbage...i replied in the other thread, but if you give your email address I can email you all the info you need on why the system is crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Taylors, I just make sure that any Taylor I order is without an ES system. Please visit http://www.acousticguitarforum.com , click Taylor guitar discussion, and search "ES system", you'll read SOOOOOO many threads on ES systems dying and having issues...

If anyone decides to go through Martin's Custom shop to get a replica of the DM3MD; could ya let me know. As of right now, I finally started saving up to buy this guitar. Cheers!

I couldn't agree with you more. I would prefer if my d-35 had a v-neck but I think it sounds better than the 28, louder and more full. I figured I'd rather have a tone that I liked better, more than how comfortable my hand is. The difference is so miniscule with the necks imo.
