Help on one of Tim's solos for IBYU

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Help on one of Tim's solos for IBYU

Unread post by Joruus » Tue Dec 14, 2004 1:15 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to learn one of Tim's solos for I'll Back You Up. A friend and I are going to play the song for a birthday present and she loves this version. I've got most of the solo down by listening to it and working it out, but there's a couple sections I'm not sure about. I was wondering if someone who's got a better ear than mine could work out a tab for it.

I've got a YouSendIt so you can listen to it: http://s17.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=DF0C ... 9B432B067A

thanks,
Matt

I tabbed out my own:

Code: Select all

Ill Back You Up Studio Solo

Tabbed by: jsgksu
Comments: I got the basic idea from other tabs Ive seen around the net and changed a lot of stuff to make what I think sounds like the best version Ive seen
Tuning: E-A-D-G-B-E

E:----------------------------------------------------------
B:----------------------------------------------------------
G:----------------------------------------------------------
D:-2/4-4-2---0--2-2-2-2-2-2/4-4-6b-4h6-2-4-6b-4h6-4-4-4-4-4-
A:---------2------------------------------------------------
E:----------------------------------------------------------

E:---------------------------------------12-12-12-------12/14-16-12-
B:-----------------------12-9-9h10-10-10----------10-10-------------
G:----------------11-9-9--------------------------------------------
D:-4/6-6-7-9-9--9---------------------------------------------------
A:------------------------------------------------------------------
E:------------------------------------------------------------------

E:-14-16-17-17\16-16-16\14-14-14-12\7-------------
B:------------------------------------9p7---------
G:----------------------------------------9p6---9-
D:--------------------------------------------7---
A:------------------------------------------------
E:------------------------------------------------
Also, those last two pulloffs should maybe be slides, its been a while since I played it or messed with the tab.

Theres also one on this site that was submitted by someone: http://www.dmbtabs.com/song.php?sid=9&tid=289 its very similair to mine, but I think a few notes are wrong and I dont like how it stays on the a-string for so long, it may be the same notes but it sounds too deep for what he plays on the album, I prefer my version for this reason, but play whatever sounds good to you.

Thanks, but I can do that one... The one in the link is a different one, from '97 I believe (I wish I knew the date). There's 5 distinct licks on this one that Tim plays. I've figured out all but lick #3 and #4. They fly by and I can't quite catch them. Doing it by ear is rough.

I play it like it's posted on the site. sounded good enough to me and it was pretty easy. The one I'm working on now is kicking my ass though.

jer1400 has done a pretty good job at transcribing things by ear...all he needs is a mp3 file.

Here is the location of his thread where you can request him to do a tab for you:

I don't think he has been doing it very much lately but it is worth a try.
