I was going to play at my company christmas party last night. Nothing special. Three songs probably ... A little Nancies, a little Christmas Song, and Sad Caper by Hootie (*throws horns*) ... Anyway the room was like a goddamned black hole. I could barely hear my guitar and when I sang it was like my voice was sucked out of my mouth and disappeared into the ether ne'er to been seen again.
The A/V moofs didn't have a monitor for me so I couldn't use that to hear what I sounded like ... In the end I didn't do it. It would have been my first time in front of people and I wasn't going to play in a situation where I couldn't hear myself.
I was looking forward to it too

I hear you man, I hate bad monitors(or even worse, no monitors). Look around your town, I'm sure you can find an open mic or something to get that first live performance under your belt.

Welcome to playing live!! It's different every time.
But once in a while the room sounds great, monitors are just right and everything becomes one. The more you do it, the less you'll be effected when things aren't perfect. And get used to the fact that they never are. It's another part of learning the craft................

Me and the guys I play with just played a company christmas party too!
We could only kind of hear ourselves the way we positioned the speaker..
Problem for us was the SCREAMING children that the parents unleashed.
Luckily a guy in the band is a magician so he was able to pacify them with that while me and the other guy played some tunes.
