Song Number: 8
Available on:
—Remember Two Things
—Live at Luther College
—Platinum Christmas
—A Very Special Christmas, Volume 3
—Live in Chicago, 12.19.98
—Maybe This Christmas Too
First Played: 15 October 1991
Songwriters: David J. Matthews
"Christmas Song" is about the life and death of Jesus Christ. Dave referred to him as "kind of a hero of mine" during one show. The song is formerly known as "Blood of Our Children," but Wasting Time speculates that Dave changed the title so it was more of a reference to the song's subject.
As it appears on Remember Two Things, the track itself is 10:53, the final five plus minutes including the "Seek Up (Reprise)" and the sound of a rainstorm and a loud, unexpected crack of thunder.
This song also appears on A Very Special Christmas, Volume 3 as a live duet between Dave and Tim Reynolds.
In December of 2000, it was released as a studio cut for the first time on Platinum Christmas. The compilation featured Toni Braxton, Santana and other modern pop stars.
On Nov. 4, 2003, it will be released on another holiday compilation, Maybe This Christmas Too. The proceeds for the compilation benefit Toys for Tots. The compilation also features Rufus Wainwright, Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne and The Flaming Lips, amongst others.
