I just listened to the OSW from the show I went to on 6/21. This is what I got from it and I'm pretty sure its how he is playing it based off the tab from this site. As someone mentioned, Kanter tabbed this in 99 so it might be a little different now, and I think it is slightly. I hope this works.
Then after that, its the same as it is on this site.

This has got to be one of my favorite intros or instrumentals that DMB does...
So my question is, as a beginner (about 1 month under my belt) is it even worth it for me to try to learn it at this point? Is it just wicked hard, or is it something that I could pick up if a put some serious time into it?
Thanks for the advice...

Well, to sound redundant, its all up to you. I have been playing for about 20 months, and after I had been playing for about a year, I looked at this intro and barely tried it so I failed miserably. I just learned this intro a few days ago and must admit that the longer you have been playing, the more rewarding and easier it is. As for you, it depends how much you have been playing in that first month. To get it to sound like Dave, you need a lot of practice with playing the guitar in general. You really have to be familiar with the fretboard and comfortable with it. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't try it, but if you just play it for about 3 hours a day, and no other songs, you should have it down in about a month. Also, there is no way to estimate how long it may take you. It could take you just a few days if you're a fast learner. Don't worry about learning how to play songs, just practice songs you can play rather easily so its fun to you. You shouldn't feel like you have to play guitar or you have to practice certain stuff, just do what you want and have fun cuz thats what its all about. I think this has been my longest post ever. Either way you go, good luck and keep on jammin!!!

I've been playing for 6 months, and i've got it down after about 30 minutes or so....
hey, if you are just going to play this intro as an instrumental tune, what would be a good way to go from the ending back into it? just start up again, or does someone know some notes i could include to work back up to the beginning?
oh, btw, is it supposed to be fingerpicked, or can i just pick it, cause i've got it going pretty good w/ a pick!

I usually use a pick. You can use whatever you want, doesn't really matter too much. Good idea about some other noted to lead into the intro. Here's something that I literally threw together in a few seconds. I think its posted on this site, but instead of the 8xx8 chord in the beginning, you can use this other one. Note: I am including the 4/6 slide which is the last note in the instrumental intro.
Thats just a basic idea of something to do with that first chord. Just mess around with that x4665x chord. Here's another cool chord but I don't know if it will sound too good, I don't have my guitar with me right now, but its x57675. I think thats it. Just have some fun with it, whatever sounds good to you.

I've been playing for about 6 years. I had to learn dave songs the hard way, searching through half-assed tabs. If an awesome site like was around, it would have been much easier. There has been much debate if beginners should even try dave. If you start playing dave now its going to take you much longer to learn. I almost flunked out of college because I spent all my time mastering his style and not studying. You need to build up some dexterity in your fingers. Also, you might have a hard time with his strumming patterns. When you play other artists it still might have that dave strumming sound. If you have the patience, go for it then. Start small, typical situation, proudest monkey,STJL,IBYU, the stone(sarcasim). Good luckCWMCALL wrote:This has got to be one of my favorite intros or instrumentals that DMB does...

also, try Digging a Ditch...it's easy.
I think that playing Dave's stuff from the beginning is pretty good, because you learn to stretch your fingers alot, ie, Billies, Captain, Crash...it also gives you something BESIDES power chords to play, more challenging.

try this
I listened to it a hundred times and I think there is an extra note missing from jkanter's, here is his version with the possible extra (1) on the A string . Try this out and see what you think.

I think JKanter's tab is right on. I downloaded the 6-21-03 show a week ago, and I have been able to play along with it exactly as Kanter has it. One reason you think there should be another note might be because of how you play the 0h1p0 part. You kinda have to let it ring and it sounds perfect. Also, you could be listening to a version where there is an extra note. Who knows, Dave messes around with that kinda stuff all the time. I think it's just to confuse us here at DMBTabs.com
