shure beta 58A or 57A?
for home recording of vocals and guitar, some live performances on vocals, and also possibly for micing an amp, but mostly vocals
cost is not an issue
what is better for me?

I think that clips would be awesome to post for everyone else when this question comes up. I can host them.Trippin Hillbilly wrote:I have both, I use them on all my recordings. The 58A for vocals and 57A for guitar. If I had to choose, I would choose the 58A just because the 57A is way too bright for vocals.
I could probably help you with some clips with each mic if ya want...pm me.

Here's some quick clips from each mic. Theyre pretty similar when it comes to recording guitar. For vocals, the 58a is a bit warmer.

Your voice dictates the mic selection. If you have a high end voice you can use a 57 (like David Grey uses). If you have a plain simple voice... use a 58. B58 is a vocal mic... a B57 can be used for vocal, but that isn't it's main use. They sound great on stacks, snares, bongos, ect. I wouldn't use a 57 to mic a guitar..... If you wanted a "full sound" you would have to use a condensor. Now when I say condensor you are thinking I don't have the money Greg... well let me tell you a little trick... I'm a guitar player... but I make a career as an audio engineer. Go to your local sound production company (NOT a music store) and ask them how much it is to rent a......lets say a Shure KSM44.... it is probably like $10-25 aday. People don't know about sound companies... and that is the secret. For example I rented a Midas Venice320 ($4,000 board)... 1 Klark-Teck Graphic ($800)... Three Behringer Composers ($300)... a 100' 24/8 Snake ($600)... a Neumann U87($1900)... 3 Beh. FBQ's ($450)... and some cables... now even though I work for the guy; for all that stuff it is only $150 aday. Why buy when you can rent?????? Check it out.

Everyone else, feel free to send me more clips to host. I will probably create a stickied thread to hold all comparisons of pickups and mics, so feel free to use yousendit and PM me clips for me to host.
