Taylor vs. Martin --- strait up.

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Taylor vs. Martin --- strait up.

Unread post by ColdLight » Thu Jun 26, 2003 1:40 am

What's up yall,
I'm making the big step up to either a taylor or a martin. Really not sure about which one to buy. I'm thinkin I'll spend approximately 800 or so. Let me know why yall think. Thanks.

only 800...go with the Martin !!! They have sweet ones for like 600-800 and you can't get a taylor in that range at the same caliber..."each martin sounds like a martin"

...just my opinion..

other than the quote which i hear alot ;)

I wish you good luck. I've been debating the two over the last two years, and I haven't gotten anywhere. But, here are some choices that should be around your price range.

Martin:
D-15
DM
DR
DX-1???

Taylor:
300 series
110
Big Baby

Those should be in order from most expensive to least for both companies.

the problem with martins IMO is that they havent seemed consistent to me.... every guitar is either a knock out or firewood. people have been singing praises of the taylor 110 ever since it came out. its worth checking out. do look at the martins though. its all about what you think.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you...except maybe with a $100-$200 smaller budget
After looking around a bit, i'm thinking that i'm looking at a DM or something like it. Anyways, i haven't heard or played any of the models discussed here yet, i'm just gathering impressions...but from what i've found, the martins are a great guitar for the money...
i'll appreciate any advice anybody else has on this issue as well

and by the way, just because you have the money doesnt mean you have to use it. if i were you, id buy the alvarez i just bought and save the money for a better guitar. dont buy a guitar just because its a certain brand. you can spend $600 less on this guitar and still have an amazing sound. the RD20S is a bang for the buck. :)

Don't rule out a Martin D-16gt or even a D-16rgt. Both have solid woods, but the rgt may be a little out of your range.

Yeah, I would've mentioned those, but I thought they were out of his range. The 16 series is one of my fav besides the $2000 series'.

Having played a-many o' Martins, and owning a 814, I only have one primary view...best guitar for the money...

up to $1,500...MARTIN

over $1,500...TAYLOR

just my opinion, as Taylor tends to lean "high-end"...sure the 110 would be nice, but for the money, I would go with a Martin

you will be happy either way 8)

peace,

come up with an extra 50 bucks and get the D-15 over the DM, I was going to get the DM but for a little extra you can get a solid wood and a better fingerboard material as well.

good call-unless you're dropping more than 1500, your better bet is most likely the martin between the two....BUT, my story is that i went looking for either a martin or taylor 2 years ago and walked away with a guild D30 and for the money have never looked back. paid around 900 i do believe and its one hell of a guitar pretty tough cause i have let mine get beat up a bit, but that's what happens when you play them...carved brace-free back just booms and blonde maple is gorgeous. anyway check it out if you get the chance.
I am who I am who I am.....Who am I, Requesting some enlightenment.

WOW!!! After reading all this debate about Taylor and Martin, I decided to have a little test of my own. I went to GC and played a bunch of Martins and Taylors under $2000. Just so you know, this past December, I was extremely close to buying a D-15, and was a huge Martin fan. So I go in to GC about 7 months later and tried out all Martins and Taylors again. This time I found a 310 that to my hear, sounded as good as any guitar in the acoustic room. Since I have my graduation party tomorrow$$$$ I will most likely be purchasing either a 310($950) or a 310ce($1150). Those are just rough prices. Anyone know where to buy taylors for a little cheaper let me know, but not online superstores. I hoped my little exprience yesterday has helped you. But whatever you buy, keep on playin it!!! :D

every guitar has it's own personality...in other words, you can't judge a guitar by it's race or otherwise...you can play 10 different 310's, and they will produce 10 different sounds...I don't believe in ordering online, unless you are placing a custom order...I think you need to play the guitar you will "marry" or else it is like a blind date...don't judge a guitar by it's name, make, or model...play before you buy...no blind dates

just my 2 cents
