Piano Question

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Piano Question

Unread post by Acousjim » Mon Nov 15, 2004 5:46 pm

I’m contemplating the idea of learning the piano. 5 years ago I bought a guitar and I taught myself how to play. I’m kind of apprehensive on buying a 250.00 keyboard because it seems pretty complicated to learn, and I don’t know if I have the patience anymore to learn something new.

So my questions are.
1. How hard it is to learn? (Compared to the guitar)
2. Is reading music a must?(tried it before, and hated it)
3. How hard is it to play coldplay? (Their music is my motivator right now.)
4. Are those lighted keyboards worth the extra money?

Any other comments are welcomed.

Well ....

1. It differs from person to person.

2. Reading music is never a must , if you can play , then play.

3. Uhmm i don't know about that.

4. I have no idea.

2. Being able to read music is definitely a must for playing piano. However, I find reading music more logical on piano than it is for guitar.
3. Not particularly difficult, but it will take a little while to learn the basics first.
4. No.

Yeah, I think you NEED to learn how to read bass and treble to be able to play piano legitimatley.

Coldplay isn't hard, they were my motivator as well. Once you get the basics down it shouldn't difficult.

Speaking from over a decade of experience, I'd say you definitely HAVE to learn to read music to be a successful pianist. It's much easier than tabs, though, from what Mikey's showed me. Coldplay shouldn't be too hard to learn once you get some basics down. I might be able to figure out the parts for you if you named some songs.

No guarantee, though. I'm not good at keeping these kinds of promises in a timely matter...you'd probably end up with the parts in a couple years.

I find reading music simple now. I never really cared about it till I started out some music theory and now it's a breeze and I love it :)

Are there any good sites out there that go over all the basics? Such as playing tips, chords, reading music, etc.....

I love the piano. i never really have lessons, but i fool around on it. i learn the scales, then find a good chord to pay arpegio with the left hand with bass notes, then a melody line with the right hand. you can get some good rhythm going, with no piano knowledge lol.

Learning to read music isn't nessecarily nessecary to play the piano, if you're proficient at the guitar and reading guitar tabs already. You do need to learn piano chords and where the notes on the keyboard correspond with the notes on the fretboard, but then you can play the piano with guitar tabs. That's been easier for me than reading music, which I can do, but not as proficiently as I can translate (transcribe? transpose? trans-something) the tabs.

Also, I'm kind of half-assing effort to create a piano tab method. There are problems, but I'm gonna figure out some way that's nice and easy. Some day. I'm pretty lazy.

If you know how to write all your scales, modes, triads, 7ths, and 9th chords, playing them on a piano is just a step away from that. That's a very nice site, but being able to play the piano, and being able to know what you're playing and why are two different things. Personally like to know what you're playing and why you're doing it.
