i thought about starting a thread on this topic but i guess i'll just post here. one thing that makes me mad is people who blindly assume ipods are the best without looking at the competition. there are a lot of other good players out there but since they're not shiny and white, people don't give them a thought.
i have a rio karma. yes, it is an ugly piece of shit, but here's why i like it better than ipods:
GAPLESS PLAYBACK. i'm not talking about crossfading or blending 2 songs together, i'm talking about seamlessly going from one track to another with no gap inbetween. i'd assume since you're all dave fans and hopefully have some live dmb albums you'd appreciate the significance of that. rio is currently the only player that can do true gapless.
rca outputs on the dock. this means that instead of buying a cute little bose stereo thingy, i just hook up my mp3 player to my reciever and it plays through my current sound system. the dock also has usb AND ethernet connections.
5 band adjustable eq. also comes with presets, but you can customize your own. shocked ipod doesn't have this yet.
15 hour battery life. and this player has been out for a while. i'm not sure which ones, but i know that other HD players have 20 hour or more battery lives. (and ipod is so proud of their 12!)
if you're a nerd like me, you'll care that ipod does not support ogg vorbis or FLAC files.
there are other, more subjective things that i like better about my karma. i've used the ipod click wheel before, and i think my rio's scroll wheel and menu system make it easier to navigate long lists of songs. it's also very easy to nagivate with one hand.
that being said, there are some things that i don't like about my karma. the hard drives have been known to crash (hasn't happened to me though), and there's very little third party support (cases, accessories, etc), but mostly IT"S UGLY. there, i said it. however, if things like sound quality and features are more important to you than looks and having a status symbol, i think you should look into other players. there are a lot of other good ones out there, i just used the rio as an example since i'm the most familiar with it.
ANYWAYS, if you only have 2 gigs of music, there's a couple of 5 gig players out there (i know rio has one that has been rated highly). sorry for the monster post... flame away ipod lovers!

I looked at very many MP3 players before buying an Ipod, Josh, But I just didn't like them. I got a 20 gig 2nd generation Ipod for 180 bucks. That is a fucking deal if I've ever seen one. 2nd Gen ones aren't desireable to most people, because they're a little bulky. But for 20 gigs at only 180 bucks, I'm not caring if I carry a damn shoe in my pocket. I love Ipods because they are extremely convienent to me and in my opinion, nothing compares to them because of my personal uses with them

If you ever decide that you'd like to give the ipod a shot, try going to Best Buy and asking to see their refurbed ipods. You'll get a great discount on it. I'm pretty confident that most best buys have them if you ask.praisedave wrote:where? ebay?DMBFan63 wrote:I looked at very many MP3 players before buying an Ipod, Josh, But I just didn't like them. Hey man, I have an ipod, its great. but before that i used over 5 different models. If you're looking for a hard drive base mp3 and don't care about size, go get a creative lab, its the 2nd best to the ipod. I would go for the ipod tho because of its size, weight, and mobility.
