Dave's prodigious music... his progressions and chords..how?

I have played his music. I don't get it, how did he come up with his chords? How did he come about writing one of the songs lol. especial jimi thing. My wonder is, how do he come up with his chords and his awesome progressions. I think it takes more than a spark of

I checked out your site, it's nice. I like your original song and the track called Childsplay.

One way that I write is to find simple open chord progressions that I like and try to find different ways of playing the same progression with chords that have a muted string to get that percussive chunk a chunk sound and go from there.

Dave has the ability to play rhythm and melody at the same time.

A lot of his chords are basically barre chords with 1 sting muted. He also likes to play power chords(the root and the 5th) with a muted string. He does have a very unique style and rhythym. He uses syncopation a lot more than other artists, which is basically not accenting the beat or accenting the offbeat.

I was always told dave was trying to play chords from music he grew up on and watched people play..but never knew that they were in a tuning other than standard, so that's how some of the chords he uses came about

He claims not to know too much about theory or how to read music. I beleive he got those chord structures from his guitar heroes as a child. There were 2 musicians to be exact but I can only remember 1 - Robert Fripp.

...and of course, Robert Fripp is known for his use of alternate tunings. I believe I read that Dave attempted to emulate Fripp's sound not knowing he was trying to play alternate tuning in standard.

Dave's a good song writer and a great story teller. Some people just have it, and he does. Probably doesn't hurt he hails from S. Africa, a place so near the birth of man.

Rhythym is the timing of the notes and their intervals. Melody is more about the tones and the relationships between the tones.

I agree. I really liked his early guitar work. But lately his stuff is kind of lacking or is real similar to his old stuff. i guess he is running out of new stuff?
