It helped me get the rythm to keep my right hand constantly in motion. After a while you'll get the hang of when to and when not to hit the strings with your pick...
As for muting, I still can't use my third finger and I sometimes get a little tone out ouf the muted strings. However, my second finger mutes prety well on its own. So overall its not to bad. Dave will sometimes play the jam while all out strumming, so practice muting wile playing the single notes on the jam, it helped me with muting the verse...
