Let your 2nd and 3rd finger rest on the E and A string ( For muting ) :)

Thanks Dave. I'm having trouble doing that. I know those are the two he uses to mute, i think this song must just be a little bigger of a hurdle for me... does he play the B, and High E strings open?? or are they muted as well?? i'm trying every approach, this song is fun to play i think...keeps ya moving!

no, he only plays the two notes. it does take practice to mute all the strings. i happen to think that stay is the hardest dave song (to learn)

Bill i may have to agree with you here... This one it's so important to make sure muting is done properly while changing frets, definitely not an easy task...i may be wrong, but does dave seem to strum this song closer to the bridge (end) of the guitar where the strings are tighter and more high pitched??

i've been noticing that he does that on A LOT of his songs. if you have the benaroya hall dvd check it out.

I use my index finger to mute the B and E string , but like it was mentioned above , Stay is a pretty damn hard song to get done right , the muting is essential on this one

Practice and you'll get it :)

Guitar II sounds fuller but slightly harder

Unread post by ProudestMonkey » Mon Jun 09, 2003 9:35 pm

I like the fullness of the guitar II part. Upstrum on the three cords following the mute. A little tough at first, but practice will make perfect.

i have a tough time w/ this song as well. i usually dont have rhythm problems but the strumming and timing get me flustered. when switching between the fingerings my strumming gets all off. i guess i need some more work on it. pointless post alert.... 8)

Clicked

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Tue Jun 10, 2003 11:57 am

Stay is one of the few songs that I played along with Dave and it just kind of clicked...

It helped me get the rythm to keep my right hand constantly in motion. After a while you'll get the hang of when to and when not to hit the strings with your pick...

As for muting, I still can't use my third finger and I sometimes get a little tone out ouf the muted strings. However, my second finger mutes prety well on its own. So overall its not to bad. Dave will sometimes play the jam while all out strumming, so practice muting wile playing the single notes on the jam, it helped me with muting the verse...

Finaly a Song I didn't have trouble with, and there aren't many. index finger mutes B and high E strings all the time 2 and 3 fingers mute low E and A strings only. the strum pattern comes in time. Play with a cd or video.

What is this about benaroya hall DVD? I was at that show and would love to see it again.

Just in case if you haven't seen dave play stay live. It is a must just to see the finger action and strum pattern.

the important thing to remember when playing stay is to keep your strumming hand at a constant up and down pace, the muting is done with the left hand.
