Wrong way to hold a pick?

Unread post by Dan5290 » Sun Nov 07, 2004 9:58 pm

Is it bad that I hold the pic with my middle finger and thumb instead of my index and thumb? Is there a "wrong way" to hold a pick?

There's no wrong way to hold a pick. As long as the pick meets the strings at a 90 degree angle you are fine.

Eddie Van Halen holds his pick like this, I wouldn't tell him he's wrong, nor would I tell you. :D

I think Jerry Garcia held his like that, too, because he was missing half his index finger.

I found that i can get a cleaner sound when i play with the pick at like a 45 degree angle, with the point toward the bridge pins. I dont know if this is correct but I like it alot more.

thers no wrong way to hold a pick but there is a right way....if that makes any sense. and that is with your thumb pushing it up against the side of your pointer finger (not on the tip).

Well your way isnt wrong. But it definatly isnt the best way. Its really hard to pick fast with it being held like that.

The way I hold it is i curl my index finger and hold it in between my thumb and the side of my curled index finger if that makes sense.

Hold it as the first position you pick it up. Like chopticks, you use it the natural way you pick it up for the first time.

Ok, thanks for all your input, I appreciate it.

I'm right on the fence right now....I've always played with my middle finger and thumb, but I just tried playing "the right way" with it kind of curled up into your index finger (ya'll know what I'm talking about) and that feels really good; except it doesn't sound quite as good. When I hold it loosely with my middle finger, I get a softer much cleaner sound when strumming, especially on muted strings. But it is much easier to play the Stone using the index finger "the right way". I'm not sure if I'm gonna switch yet, I don't know.

Get rougher picks. They are a lot easier to hold on to than the smooth ones.

I don't believe that at all. I used to play middle, index thumb when i first started- Now i use index & thumb, and it feels much more natural & easier
