Hey - thanks for listening. Hmm. I wonder what my range is
Maybe that's my problem; that I try too much to emulate a song as it's originally done without putting my own spin on it with vocals that are more suited to my voice's range.
Since I started recording myself I've found things I like about my voice and things that I really shiver at. It's certainly helpful to also get feedback here. Thanks for the comments. Anyone else?

Are you fingerpicking this song? It doesn't sound like it. If not, you should try it because it makes it sound a lot better.
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...
I have to agree with billy, this song is meant to be fingerpicked.. most of the song can be done with a pick and sound ok, but the signature line to the song is really hard to make groove with a pick.. your version reminds me of when I hear D+T play The Maker.. has that same kind of groove to the way you play this. So, fingerpick it, but most of all.. GROOVE. Otherwise, not bad, I have listened to some of your other songs you have posted.. you just need to keep on playing/singing and you'll be awesome.

sweet guitar work...vocals aren't shabby at all...if it is still in the works, then you should have no problem...what guitar are you using?

Thanks guys. Yeah, actually in this recording I was doing some weird verse strumming with a pick. I normally still play it with a pick but usually get closer to the "groove". My finger-picking skills are limited to Dust in the Wind
. I like using a pick but you're right - it's hard to replicate the riff with one. Maybe I'll give it another shot and post an update.
My guitar is the dreaded Martin DX-1 that most people seem to loathe. I love it though and it sounds decent for an under $400 guitar. The recording setup is something to be desired though (chez PC mic with a laptop's sound card). Some songs come out better than others. I still need to find the right mic position to best record my voice and guitar at once. One always seems to drown out the other...
Anyway, thanks all for the feedback. Keep an eye out for an updated version!

Well, I've been plinking around with it for a while. Still trying the 'find' my voice. I've been playing guitar casually for 12 years, but only started with Dave type music a few years ago. The ability to even sing and play at the same time only just 'came' to me. I still need to polish my voice and remember to stay within my range.firedancer86 wrote:sweet guitar work...vocals aren't shabby at all...if it is still in the works, then you should have no problem...what guitar are you using?

Hey Roast....nice stuff... i actually kinda like this song even tho im not a huge mayer fan.
What I would suggest is playing the intro picked with the two mutes...you cant really hear them on the album but if you download a live version you'll hear it..
Oh yeah..i've seen mayer finger-pick the intro with a pic in the palm of his hand ...then when he gets to the chorus he strums it, it sounds pretty sweet.
Give that a try..
Awesome job man, keep postin'

BLOODY AMAZING!
I agree - finger-picked intro would be awesome, but hey, it's your version so maybe you don't wanna and that's okay too, no one here is trying to be EXACTLY like JM.
I really liked the overall feel.
As for the technical aspects of the recording, I won't even go into it being that I answered your question on "how-to"...
Cheers!
