Chet Amp/Pickup

Unread post by hayter » Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:36 pm

Hi, I just got a nice, sunburst Chet Atkins SST off eBay for a great price. When amped on my cheap amp, it sounds a bit too electric for my taste. What pick ups and amps would you suggest for someone seeking a more acoustic sound to this guitar? Also, what is involved in getting a pick up installed? Thankyou for your help!

wait is there a pickup on this, or do you want to put in a fishman or somethin, adding one, you may be able to do yourself, if you dont have the balls (like i dont) itd be around $100 from what i hear... as far as amps goes, im lookin at getting a yorkville 100 watt acoustic amp soon. its really nice, has allot of effects, really nice amp... then get my chet off ebay.

I could give the information to get the same setup as Dave's Chets through Fishman. It will cost you about $200. I would take a look at a Roland AC-60 amp. I have it and extremely satisfied...

Wait, is a pick up the same thing as electronics? All I know is that there is a plug in it and the rotating knobs at the top of the guitar. If I were to buy a Fishman Pickup could I install it myself? What would this entail? Also, what's the difference between the electronics of the guitar and the pick up?

what kinda pickup you talkin bout? if you mean a piezo, then your gitars already got one, if you wanted to replace it you'd have to remove the saddle and do a whole bunch of other complicated stuff. i wouldnt suggest it nunless you're experienced. "electronics" when reffering to a guitar usually means a pre-amp on an coustic electric. it would be more than tricky to put one on a chet. i've never heard of electronics of a pickup.

I wouldn't install yourself...Also if you put a Fishman undersaddle pickup in your gibson chet, you wont be able to use your control panel (bass, treble, volume) on the side of your guitar...Just contact Fishman and ask them about getting your Chet SST setup just like Daves. Joe Barbieri (fishman tech guy), does it as a side job and cost of everything isnt bad at all. Just shoot me a PM if you have any questions about that

DON'T BOTHER! Just get the Fishman Aura ;) . 300 bucks. It's fucking amazing piece of equipment. I am getting one for x-mas, my folks said so, lol. What it does is takes your guitar, no matter what pickup, under the saddle, whatever the chet has, or even soundhole (I have a neo-d), and it makes it sound just like a studio miced guitar! And . . . it does!!!! I've tried one, and fell in love. You can even hook it up to the net and download different settings into your guitar. Also, fishman can do the settings for you to make it sound just right. You record your guitar through a (good) mic, and send it to them online, they make the settings, and send it to download!

Don't send the guitar in, just tell them you have a chet (you can do that since it is a famous guitar, and they deal with that too, and are going to have famous guitar settings to download), and they will set it up, send it to ya, plug it into the aura, and you are set man ;) .

AURA ROCKS!

Joe B. here. How’s it going? You have a couple of guitars that are not really good models for the Aura. First of all, the soundboard type pickups that are used on the Expression System do not translate well to the Sound Image technology. It works best with undersaddle pickups. As for the Chet, same thing. The Aura is really meant for hollow body guitars since the sound images are made from actual microphone recordings of the guitar. It’s unlikely you will ever see Images for these 2 guitars. You may get some interesting results trying some of the existing images but it’s not something we can guarantee. Glad to hear you’re happy with the SST.
