Question about strings at neck

Unread post by dpresti » Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:36 pm

i've noticed on tv and some photos that some artists, it looks like when they restring their guitar they dont cut off the extra string at the neck of the guitar. but rather that kinda put it into a circle thingy.. its hard to explain it, but its like 6 little circles?

my question is, how and why do they do this?! does it change anything? or is it just cause it looks cool?

not sure how to explain how to do this on the internet - but you roll your excess string into a cirlce until its the size you ant it, then you pull the end of the string in the circle, then wrap it back out, then in again. It shold stay. It doesn't do anything except make it less annoying if you don't have anything to cut the strings with.

so do i do it on all 6 strings?

yes, all 6.. personally I'd just cut them if I had something to cut them with, but do what you want. It isn't hard to do.

yeah, go for it, as long as the string is wrapped around the post a good 3 times atleast you should be goog to go.

its stupid and worthless. it causes the string to go out of tune if the circles are touched or accidentally knocked around. if you can cut them, cut them

Mine are in circles for the first ever, but only because I lost the wire cutters. haha.

I put mine in circles that way I can lossen them to adjust the saddle, clean them, or even switch strings and then still use the same strings later.

"its stupid and worthless. it causes the string to go out of tune if the circles are touched or accidentally knocked around. if you can cut them, cut them"

That would be your tuners. Get 'em tightened, man. Really -- the string wrapped in a circle has nothing to do with it because that's not where the tension is.

One of my best buds has the strings like that on his guitar. It's not hard to do. I personally prefer the strings cut, gives a cleaner look to the guitar.

Someone once told me you "kill" the string when you cut the excess. I doubt it.

What do you think?

You just use your pick to do it. I think it looks dumb.
