Dave playing LIOG?
Dave playing LIOG?
I have been playing Lie in our graves for about two years, and was wondering how Dave plays the intro/verse. Does he do any muting after the D chord? Has anyone seen a video with him playing it live? I have a feeling I have beeen playing it nothing like Dave does. Iam talking about the 4 to 2 on the A string and the rest of the notes after does he mute while he playes these notes?

Seattle rocks!! Man of the hour I know what chords and notes he playes my question is how does he play them muting any of the strings while the 4 to 2 bass line mute and then 0-2-4-2-4 parts or does he just pick them one at a time? I have relearned a couple songs like stone OSW and Ants. because he uses a half strum and mutes all but the string he is playing. I have noticed he uses this style on alot of songs. and was looking for a heads up if someone has seen him playing this live and noticed this.

FOr the first part of your post, I made a recording of this a while ago, it starts out slow so you can get the rhythm down then slowly gets up to full speed. It could probably help you, let me know if you want it. For your second question, yes, you only play that part right when the band comes in and thats it.Dancing Ants wrote:on the jam called "First Small Jam", the one with the 5X3/7X5...does it have the same melody and such as the end jams? I can't place it in the song...
also, the part where the band comes in, and you play the Eminor, A, and then G chords.....do you play this only once?

whats up dude
I just popped in my video of Live at Chicago and watched him play LIOG. He strums the whole thing. I can tell that when he plays the 4-2 bass line he still strums full (cause he's muting all the strings below the A string easily with his pinky and then his index finger). But then when he does the next part 0-2-4-2 or whatever he cuts his strums in half. So do half strums for that part. Then back to full strum as soon as you put your ring finger on the G bass note and then back to the D chord and go on like that.
Using the half strums to "strum-pick" the notes for the part when it changes (he uses Am during the part and its a different riff) is even harder cause the whole part is on the lower strings. So if you screw up and hit the top strings you're in trouble and it'll sound like shit cause you're not muting those with your left hand.
See what he does is hit them all on downstrokes and ends up strumming the strings under the string the note is on (which are muted by the finger which frets the note.) So you don't worry about the strings underneath. Just the ones on top. This is why its a "half-strum" you angle your hand slightly in a way to make little chops so you don't hit the tops strings.
man i hope that makes some sense....
